I try to think of some two word phrase of commonly used words that is somehow evocative and related to the profession.
My Mes is named "Interrupted Dream."
By the way, my nec, "Night Fell," was named pre-Factions and was not a rip-off of Chapter 3.

Or like a tradition. Again, it can be two ways: A. A name is given based upon the family, like "every man since five generations has been a ..." and it strengthens the force of tradition on that young person. B. We say it's the time last names developed (which would be somewhere around 15th or 16th century in real world) and simply say that it's a family tradition as strong as in A.
Or it's a nickname. Actually, we're guessing the characters are already grown, and they have done certain things. We're not naming a child, but someone who might simply have had some reknown in the academy for being honest and as such had taken the last name "The Honest" (because, apparently, he had become known under this name anyhow). This is especially viable if we think of the time before fixed last names were common or while they were in the process of establishing.
Or using some more obscure versions of some meaning, a different or fantasy language (given or not) and backtracking it to some sort of holistic view of the world, that everything is given and falls into place, and that the names in secrecy already reveal the destiny. In hindsight, this sounds a lot like 1, just this is that nobody really knows why they name stuff like they name it...
|
That is, of course, true. But it's worth mentioning that a lot of the names - and nicknames - we now attribute to historical figures weren't contemporary. They were usually made up by historians after the fact. And of course, when people did get around to formalising a system of surnames, a lot of the time they did in fact choose names based on their professions...

True as well @non-contemporary nicknames. Especially for heroic figures or characters from ballads or epics, much less for actual kings and rulers.

A friend of mine let me borrow a cd I had never heard before. It was titled: Devil's Path/In The Shades Of Life. A rather interesting album featuring music from both Dimmu Borgir and Old Man's Child. The song called St. Aidens Fall really stood out for me, so I gave my pvp mesmer the name. The song is brutal and so are mesmers.

My Mesmer's last name, Beppu, comes from the book "Last Legends of Earth," who's heroine is named Chan-ti Beppu. (that's my Dervish's name) Her first name, Ahndia, got pulled from god knows where, but sounds a bit exotic to me. So there ya go.

The mesmer attributes reminded me of the magical/telepathic abilities of Sunrunners in the Melanie Rawn Dragon Prince series.
Her heroine Sioned has always been one of the stronger female fictional heroes I've liked, so out of the facial and hair choices, I went with what I thought Sioned would look like as a Mesmer.
I didn't want to call her "Sunrunner Sioned" because it felt silly, so I played around with different interpretations of "Sioned Of The Sun".
I settled on "Sioned De La Sol". (but kinda wish I'd gone with "Sioned Du Soleil")

Cuthroat Dibbler....
A wonderful character that sells pies, Rat on a stick and usually "anything" to 'get the job done' as it were; is always "there" whenever "there" is popular for whatever reason, Coronations, hangings, floggings, Wintersday etc.
He's also quite a dark mover and shaker in political circles (for those that HAVE read the books)
Original name comes from the Discworld series of books by Terry Pratchett
Being a salesman it seemed fitting to be a mesmer due to the required illusion skills etc. A shifty bugger at the best of times it all seems to gel with who Dibblers is and what he does

and my temporary mesmer that completed Factions - just to get the end-game green and got binned secs later after completing his purpose:
Akhmet [i just love love LOVE this name!]
Ammit

and now - after almost running out of egyptian names - my new assasin is a Chinese god! and i just might continue this trend!

My Mesmer's name is Mizuki Omoigami. Hm well, 'omoi' is mind or heart and 'igami' means to bend. Put them together and you get Mindbender, or Heartbreaker if you don't take it literally. Mizuki means 'beautiful moon' and just sounds cute.
Mizuki Omoigami... she'll warp your mind.

Deus Toutatis:
Deus (meaning god - and all my characters share that first name)
Toutatis: Named after the Celtic god of warfare, legendary for being able to turn away, deflect, or otherwise neutralise any attack thrown against him (something that mesmers do very well indeed)

First - Canus Minor. Second character, my first character is... yes... Canus Major. (Note: Canis, the proper spelling, was taken.)
Second - Canus Deletus. Made this guy for the Nightfall test weekend, with the intent of deleting him after. Never did. He's my first character to finish Nightfall. (The second, you ask? Canus Minor.)
Third - Canus Specificus. This mesmer is specifically for PvP.
Yes, I have three active mesmers on the roster.

Naming chars
Here is how I do it...
I play with my husband so we decided when we started to have chars with the same last name. We are all ..... Slays, unless the first name we come up with is too long .
Then just to help guildies keep track I decided to have all my characters start with a K.
Then using your favorite search engine, search "baby names".
This is what I have:
Kishi my Ne means 'dark' in Hindi, her pet 'Keena' (spider of course) means 'brave'.
Kynan my warrior means 'warrior Princess' in Gaelic.
Kynetix my ele - well thought that one up without the list.
Kacella means 'hunter' in some african language (yes she is a NF character).
Unfortunately my Mesmer was one of my first chars - before I came up with my naming convention and she is Katie .
I think I need a new idea for the new game.......
